Congrats to Our Local ROPs

Hats Off to Our Regional Automotive Tech Schools

ROPs are technical schools that educate today's techs for both collision and mechanical disciplines. By learning the fundamentals of collision repair, body shops in Nor Cal can hire these young professionals as they enter the automotive field. With all of the new technologies, this profession is more coveted than ever before.

As they displayed their skills at a regional SkillsUSA competition on January 26 at Eden Area ROP in Hayward, Calif., top students from three automotive tech schools vied for medals and a trip to the state finals in San Diego, Calif., on April 4-7. Thirty-five high school and college students studying automotive collision repair from Eden Area ROP, Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) in San Jose, Calif. and Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. competed in two categories—collision repair and autobody re-finishing/paint. With 12 medal winners overall, all of the schools were well-represented, but in the end Eden Area ROP took eight medals, under the direction of Head Instructor Daniel Pareja.

SkillsUSA is a highly-respected national organization for students in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education. It sponsors the SkillsUSA regional, state and national competitions annually, designed to test the skills needed for a successful entry level performance in given occupational fields, including collision repair.

At Anderson Behel, we strongly support our Bay Area ROPs and the SkillsUSA competitions nationwide. Good luck to all of the students from Eden Area ROP and Central County Occupational Center (CCOC), as they proceed to the state finals in San Diego!

SP: Wow tough question, there have been countless experiences my team and myself have been proud of. I have been told by several people that my personality is one of the few.. My dad brought me up with the understanding of treating folks the way you would like to be treated, I have applied this to every situation I come across. Whatever type of personality you run across in a customer service business, they are only wanting one thing, great customer service. Listen, make direct eye contact and engage in the reason they are in your business, make them proud to have been given, or in some cases found via the internet your business. What are some of the changes you've seen in this industry over the years and how has AB reacted to these? Wow another question that could take all day. Consolidation, not only with collision center’s but the insurance carriers. Performance indicators are getting more critical to the success and failure of any one collision center.

Cars are Safer than Ever

Great News! Cars are Safer than Ever

At Anderson Behel, we always stay aware of trends and breaking news about car safety. Driving safely is still the #1 reason for fewer car accidents, but crashworthy vehicles also save a ton of lives every day. By concentrating on things such as occupant protection to reduce the number of fatal and serious injuries that occur in the United States each year, the carmakers are making all the right moves when it comes to safety.

By stepping up its research efforts and dramatically upgrading their test procedures for evaluating motor vehicle safety, car manufacturers are happy to say that “Safety does not happen by accident!” Crashworthiness research encompasses new and improved vehicle design, safety countermeasures and equipment to enhance occupant safety, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA).

Did you know that alternative fuel vehicles are more crashworthy than gas cars?

The NHTSA says alternative cars are now safer than ever, but there is still more testing required: “Ensuring that alternative fuel vehicles attain a level of safety comparable to that of other vehicles requires extensive research, due to the many advanced and unique technologies that have previously not been tested in the transportation environment.”

Did you also know that your kids are also safer in today’s newer cars, vans and trucks?

“Child safety crashworthiness is at its all-time highest, due to new technologies, in-depth studies performed by carmakers and reports that illustrate the progress of child safety in the United States. In addition, the NHTSA has been vigilant in promoting child safety by devising regulatory actions, and sponsoring discussions about the issues regarding obstacles in the wide-spread use of booster seats.”

Finally, your rear seat occupants are also safer today than ever before, according to the NHTSA:

“Front-row occupant protection in frontal crashes has benefited from recent developments in restraint performance and vehicle crashworthiness, which have been driven partly by manufacturers’ efforts to improve vehicle scores in consumer information tests. Occupants in the rear seat have not seen the same benefits their front seat counterparts. NHTSA is investigating different technologies to better understand the potential of these front seat technologies in the rear seat.”

Green Reason #1: We're Waterborne!

Our Head Painter Says It's Numero Uno

While people all over the world try to save the planet, the collision industry is stepping up to embrace a greener approach to fixing and painting cars. Several years ago, the state of California became the country’s first to mandate the use of waterborne paint. Some shops were reluctant to change, but auto body paint shops like Anderson Behel gladly made the conversion, with the help of PPG and its Nexa Autocolor Aquabase Waterborne product. This planet-friendly paint is distributed by PPG and Anderson Behel was the first auto body paint shop in the Bay Area to use Autocolor Aquabase, to compete with other high-end European paint lines.

Since then, every car repaired at Anderson Behel is painted using this newer, more progressive type of paint, thereby saving the environment and providing a safer workplace for the shop and its employees. Anderson Behel’s auto body paint shop head painter Gerardo Lopez (pictured) appreciates the greener approach to painting cars by using Nexa Autocolor Aquabase Waterborne, he explained. “I paint around eight cars every day, so the finished product has to be superior. As far as the time it takes to paint the cars with waterborne, it’s actually a shorter process as compared to solvent. It’s faster, because normally the basecoat flashes in 1-3 minutes, where it used to take five minutes with solvent. So, right there you’re saving time in the booth. Plus, the finished product is always excellent! Customers are thrilled when they see their cars painted with the Nexa Autocolor Aquabase Waterborne paint.”

So, the next time your car gets into an accident (it happens, unfortunately) and you take it to Anderson Behel for repairs, rest assured that your vehicle is being painted using waterborne paint. We’re all working harder to be green, by using less gas when we drive and recycling whenever we can, so why not be green when your car is getting fixed? It just makes good sense!
